Screening to Raise Awareness Regarding Early Detection for Prostate Cancer – the Second Leading Cause of Cancer Death Among American Men
Dedham, MA – Greater Boston Urology, an integrated urology practice, is offering free PSA blood tests at its Dedham Care Center on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, from 4-7pm in cooperation with ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer. ZERO is a national nonprofit dedicated to ending prostate cancer.
The free PSA (prostate specific antigen) screening is being offered to raise awareness about prostate cancer and in advance of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September. The test itself is available to any man over the age of 40. No appointment is necessary (although appreciated) and no health insurance is required. Results of the test will be mailed to the participating individual.
When it comes to PSA screening, Greater Boston Urology follows the American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines, which support screening in men between the ages of 55-69 and earlier for those men who are known to be at risk for prostate cancer. This includes men with a family history of the disease and African American men who should be screened as early as age 40.
“We’re very pleased to offer this free screening to raise awareness about prostate cancer,” said Dr. Michael J. Curran, CEO of Greater Boston Urology. “We are strong proponents of advocacy and community outreach, and early detection for this disease is crucial to a positive outcome.”
