FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Boston, MA) – In June 2016, The Journal of Urology published a consensus statement from the American Urological Association (AUA) and Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR) regarding prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance imaging targeted biopsy in patients with a prior negative biopsy.

After an expert panel of urologists and radiologists from the AUA and SAR reviewed the existing literature, the panel concluded that when high quality prostate MRI is available, it should be strongly considered for any patient with a prior negative biopsy who has persistent clinical suspicion for prostate cancer and who is under evaluation for a possible repeat biopsy.

Note the emphasis on “high quality prostate MRI.” The article goes on to say, “Marked variation not only in image quality, but also in radiologists’ performance in examination interpretation, is a primary barrier to the widespread clinical adoption of prostate MRI.”

Greater Boston Urology uses UroNav, an exceptional piece of equipment for performing 3D MRI/ultrasound fusion biopsies. In addition, GBU has designated three specific physicians who have done additional training and have spent hundreds of hours gaining expertise in utilizing this technology. All MRIs are done at Shields MRI, renowned for its precision in performing and reading MRIs.
