Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) Names Greater Boston Urology (GBU) as Local Sponsor at This Year’s Event in Boston

Dedham, MA – Greater Boston Urology, an integrated urology practice, recently announced that it will be the local presenting sponsor at this year’s annual walk to end bladder cancer. “BCAN Presents the Greater Boston Urology Walk to End Bladder Cancer” will be held on May 5, 2018 at The Riverway, 440 Park Drive, in Boston. Check-in opens for the 1.4-mile walk at 8:00 a.m. and the program begins at 9:00 a.m.

In addition, the Prudential Tower will be illuminated in orange on May 1 to kick off Bladder Cancer Awareness Month and to promote the Walk.

The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) will have walks in over 25 cities across the U.S. this May (coinciding with Bladder Cancer Awareness Month) to support BCAN and raise awareness of this deadly disease. This year, BCAN hopes to raise $650,000 nationally, including $15,000 for the walk in Boston.

Bladder cancer is the 6th most common cancer in the U.S., and over 81,000 people are expected to be diagnosed this year. Public awareness of the disease is alarmingly low. The Walk shines a spotlight on the signs and symptoms of bladder cancer and provides hope for new treatments.

Dr. Michael J. Curran, CEO of Greater Boston Urology, says, “At GBU we believe strongly in advocacy and community outreach. Bladder cancer doesn’t receive as much attention as other diseases. Yet, like any disease, early detection is critical to positive outcomes. Increasing everyone’s awareness about bladder cancer while honoring those who’ve lost their lives to this disease is extremely important. By sponsoring BCAN’s walk in Boston, GBU can build awareness at the community level.”

“The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network is grateful to Greater Boston Urology for their demonstrated dedication to bladder cancer patients and ensuring that more and more people are aware of the risks. GBU’s focus on bladder cancer in the Greater Boston area is evident,” says BCAN’s CEO, Andrea Maddox-Smith. “We’re especially excited to have GBU support BCAN in our efforts for Bladder Cancer Awareness Month. With both the Prudential Tower illuminating in orange on May 1st and the GBU Walk to End Bladder Cancer on May 5th, Boston is really ‘shining a light on bladder cancer.'”
